I printed a few filter/cleaner devices and gave them a run. After deciding on a design I liked (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:210616) I inserted it before my filament guide. Inspiration struck when the cleaner was pulled to the top of the guide and sat there like a hat.
This device uses compression to hold a sponge in place, and is a tight fit. I improved the filament guide arm with some added support and it is currently in use on both of my printers. I add a few drops of mineral oil to the sponge daily.
It isn't sexy, I'm sure it isn't perfect, but is works perfectly.
Currently on revision 3. Any suggestions will be considered in the next revision(s).
Update 3 July 2021:
Added a sponge cup with bowden tube filament guide. Print as shown in the image and use no supports.
Inspiration (and the tube clamp) from Fedor Sosnin. I was in CAD drawing an elbow tube to add and looking at Fedor's extruder (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4647801) on my desk. CLICK! I happened to have a short piece of Capricorn laying on the table by the printer (don't ask, it was a tragedy.)
