The French Directoire chess set, also known as the French Revolutionary chess set, is a classic design that emerged in France during the late 18th century, specifically during the Directoire period of 1795-1799. Created in the aftermath of the French Revolution, This style of chess set reflects the style and aesthetics of that time characterized by its simplicity and elegance.
During the Directoire period (1795-1799), which followed the Reign of Terror, there was a shift in French art and design towards more classical and understated styles. Manufacturers produced the Directoire chess set during the transition from the Baroque and Rococo styles to the more austere and classical Neoclassical style. The chess piece design reflects this new aesthetic with a simple yet elegant design. The chess pieces are usually made from ivory or bone and have a classic shape and form. A notable feature of the Directoire chess set is the absence of elaborate decoration or ornamentation. The pieces are often plain or lightly carved, with minimal embellishment.
The French Directoire chess set is often considered one of the most classic and elegant chess sets ever created. Today, the Directoire chess set remains popular among chess enthusiasts and collectors who appreciate its historical significance and timeless design.
I modeled the chess set using inspiration from images of several French Directiore chess sets. Most references describe the chess pieces as non-weighted, but there should be room in the bases for appropriate weights if desired.
Size (height/base):
When provided, many references give the height of the King as 85mm, however I modeled this set much larger with a King height of 115.1 mm and other pieces proportional to the King. With a king height of 115.1 mm (4 ½"), this set is slightly larger than that of Staunton Scale 9 (> St. 9). I feel this size gives the set a better presentation on a tournament-sized board. Your mileage may vary.
