Description

PDF

This holder is for abrasive cloth rolls which are up to 25mm wide and 200mm diameter (in the US, this is a 1" x 50 yard roll). The design can be extended to hold a large number of shop rolls.

The design includes screw mounting holes in both the back and the bottom, with the idea that the holder can be mounted to a wooden support board. The support board can be free standing on the bench, or wall mounted.

This holder is provided in two variations - Variant One uses an axle to suspend the shop rolls in the holder; Variant Two does not use the axle, but requires the shop rolls to be inserted “upside down” (see Note 2).

Note 1 : For Variant 1, it is necessary to print a Hub piece for each shop roll. I designed the Hub piece to fit my shop rolls, with some allowance for slightly different sizes. If this hub does not fit your shop rolls, then you can use Variant Two of the print.

Note 2 : For Variant Two, the shop rolls must be placed into the holder “upside down” - that is, with the plain (non-abrasive) side of the roll facing up as it is protruding from the holder (see photos). Otherwise, there is simply too much friction when pulling on the roll end.

Note 3 : For Variant Two, I recommend using the RollHolder06-LabelHolder stl file; this version of the lable holder has tabs that help push the end of the roll out of the way of the label.

Note 4 : Labels - Roll labels are provided for all common sizes. For other sizes, there is a blank label piece; alternately, individual digit labels can be printed in the required combination.

Assembly

The design consists of these parts :

  • Holder - this is the main section that holds the rolls; print as many of these as needed
  • Pin - six pins are needed to join each additional Holder
  • EndCap - one endcap is needed to cover the side of the initial Holder.
  • LabelHolder - one LabelHolder is needed for each Holder (different versions are provided for each of the two variants)
  • Label - one label is needed for each Holder. Labels for all common roll sizes are included, as well as a blank label which can be used for other sizes.

In addition, Variant One requires the following addition pieces :

  • Hub - one required for each shop roll
  • Axle2Cap2a and Axle2Cap2b - one of each required
  • Axle2 - one required for each additional shop roll

Start by adding the EndCap to the initial Holder. The EndCap includes built in “pins” so additional pins are not needed for this step. Line up the EndCap and press the pins into place evenly.

For an additional roll holder, insert each of the six Pins into a hole - make sure they are fully inserted (there is an internal stop which will allow the Pin to insert half way). Line up the inserted Pins with the existing Holder and press evenly and fully into place.  The easiest way to do this is to insert the pins as much as possible by hand, place the Holder pin side down on a tabletop, and then press firmly and evenly down on the Holder until all of the Pins are fully and evenly seated.

For each Holder, insert the appropriate Label into a LabelHolder - they will simply slide into place. Each Holder includes a “bar” for holding the label; snap the LabelHolder onto this bar (see photos for proper orientation). Use the LabelHolder appropriate for each variant:

  • Variant One (axle) : RollHolder06-LabelHolder
  • Variant Two : RollHolder04-LabelHolder

For Variant One (axle), insert a Hub piece into each shop roll. Assemble the axle pieces by screwing them together; assemble all of the axle pieces except the final AxleCap. Insert the shop rolls into the Holder one at a time, and insert the axle through each Hub. Secure the axle in place with the final AxleCap.

Previously noted : The design includes screw mounting holes in both the back and the bottom, with the idea that the holder can be mounted to a wooden support board. The support board can be free standing on the bench, or wall mounted.
