This is a holder that you can use if you want to replace the Raspberry Pi Model B with a Raspberry Pi 3 in the original version of the FABtotum 3D-printer.

NOTE: Please be aware of that you have to cut away some plastic on the FABtotum to get the Raspberry Pi 3 to fit. Please be careful if you decide to replace your Pi with a Pi 3. And make sure to DISCONNECT THE POWER CORD before you start.

I recently read that FABtotum has a new version of their 3D-printer called FABtotum CORE Edition. It is powered by a Raspberry Pi 3 instead of a Raspberry Pi Model B.
As an owner of the original FABtotum I was very interrested to know if it was possible to retrofit a Raspberry Pi 3 to the original version of the printer. I read in their forum that it should be possible so I decided to try to do it.

It was possible, and it turned out to work great! It did involve some "modification" of some plastic wall within the printer, but it was not that difficult to do. I also had to create something to hold the Pi 3 in place, as the screw holding the original Pi could not be used (the screw used a hole in the Pi PCB which is not present on the Pi 3).

Notes:

I printed it with a 0.35 mm nozzle, but I don't think that the nozzle size matters.

Post-Printing

Additional parts needed:

Besides the 3D-printed parts, you need the following to mount everything together:

  • 2 x 16mm M2.5 machine screws
  • 2 x M2.5 nuts
  • 2 x 20mm M4 machine screws
  • 2 x M4 nuts
