Downsizing to a much smaller sit-stand desk, I became determined to mount every object I needed throughout the day to my desk to create more order as well as more open surface area on my desk. To my dismay, there aren't that many under-desk laptop mounts! And, so, I set out to make my own!

This represents my second attempt: for the 2021 MacBook Pro that I have from work.  I've previously designed another, for an M1 MacBook Air that I will post soon. Same recipe, different parameters.

I deliberately went for a minimalist look because (1) that's my style and (2) I'm lazy!  I even designed the main body in PrusaSlicer, doing some basic arithmetic in my head. This is why the end piece model looks odd: it includes a couple of negative volumes from PrusaSlicer. So, yes, I should have used TinkerCAD or similar from the beginning. Oops!

The MBP fits but you will have to use some force to insert/remove it! While the tolerances are tight, I found the already narrow width of the “arms” of the holder narrow enough to be frightening! For my desk, I wanted this to fit neatly within 30mm: the width of the space under the edge of the sides of my desk. If you have more space, consider widening the model 2-4mm and perhaps add 1mm vertically. This will get you a slightly looser fit.

To be honest, though, I rather like the tight fit! It keeps the laptop firmly in place while manipulating the USB-C ports.

If you need access to the other ports on that side of the laptop… well… you're going to need to tweak the model.

I printed on:

MK3S+

0.8mm nozzle

0.4mm layer height

30% infill (we don't want this thing warping when loaded!)

I'm sure that smaller nozzles will work but, oh my, the longer print time!
