Description

PDF

I performed my first valve timing adjustment on my '82 Yamaha XJ650, and ended up with four old shims. I don't want to throw them out, but I don't have a big collection or shim kit to save them with.

Instead I printed them into this model creating a curious display object/paperweight to keep in my office. Plus, someday I can always break them out if they're needed!

Printing

Print this with pauses after each section, and insert your shim. The model is designed so the printer will bridge over the shim after it's inserted and continue printing. See my GCODE file for an example. I didn't use M601 pauses I didn't want my nozzle to cooldown, so I used G4 dwells for 10 seconds instead. I had to act fast and insert the shim, and then clean drool off the nozzle before it continued to print, but it worked well.

Model

This is designed for 29mm diameter, ~2.7mm thick shims. I've included STEP and Fusion360 files for modification. In Fusion, you can change the parameters of the rectangular pattern to change the number of shims the model fits, or comment and I can make one for you.
