I'm reusing the monster boxes and the character boxes from Qualith's Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion insert. If you like/rate this model, be sure to like/rate theirs as well!

When I kickstarted Frosthaven, I selected an organization system as part of my pledge. When the drama happened I decided to try my first Folded Space insert. While I absolutely LOVE the quality of their product (it's a really premium foam board) I didn't like their organization solution at all. The monster standees are tucked nicely in but you need a separate legend to find the correct monster. The Character boxes are turned on their side so you can't see the symbols. The token holders were not really an improvement over the molded plastic insert that came with the game. So I chucked it all (except for the accordion folder for the map tiles) and went looking for an alternative.

I used the following non-printed items:
  • Accordion folder - I've got the Folded Space one, but pretty much any would do
  • UltraPro mini card binder pages. 17 pages to hold the craftible / purchasable / solo mission items. The pages fit nicely, but I doubt any binder would. Maybe pick up some binder rings or 3-ring report covers to hold them together
  • UltraPro foam - 4 pieces to separate the monster boxes from the character boxes to keep rattle to a minimum
  • UltraPro 50-count 2-Piece Case - 1 of these to hold the Boss standees and cards. Could probably print something equivalent fairly easily, but I had a bunch of these around.
So what did I make?
  • Character Miniature box holder (holds all but 2 of the character miniature boxes)
  • Standee stand holder (also has room for the 2 extra character miniature boxes)
  • Monster Level cards and sleeves holder (this could be improved, but works well for now)
  • Summer/Winter Event card holder (holds all the larger cards with room to spare for those secret envelope contents)
  • Covers for the monster boxes. The original design uses the initiative trackers from Jaws of the Lion, but the Frosthaven trackers are not rectangular, so we need something to hold the contents in
  • Mini card holder - this one is tight currently and will get tighter because of SPOILERS
  • Return address labels for the monster boxes. Print that PDF on Avery ½" x 1 ¾" labels (5967 or equivalent). I printed it twice and stuck 2 labels on each box: 1 on the lid and one on the side.
What do I need to print?

I've included source SCAD files for the things I made (using the modular board game framework) as well as STLs for all the required pieces and 3MF files with the printer settings I used (mainly .3mm SPEED layer hight, 20% infill). I've also included the 2 STLs from Qualith's work.

  • Character Mini Holder - 1 copy
  • Event Cards - 2 copies
  • Hero Storage x 2 - 2 copies (so 4 total storage boxes)
  • Mini Card Holder - 1 copy
  • Monster Box Lids - 2 copies (so 48 total lids!)
  • Monster Boxes x 24 - 2 copies (so 48 total boxes!)
  • Monster Level Holder - 1 copy
  • Standee Holder - 1 copy
Before you start:
  • Pick 4 starting characters and put their cards/miniatures/etc into the 4 printed Hero boxes. Also put the attack modifer decks into the printed Hero boxes. I return those empty character boxes and put them backwards so I know which ones are still there.
  • Go through that Welcome To Frosthaven sheet! it has critical information on how to set up the decks
  • If you got the removable sticker set shave about 1/8" off the top of the folder so it will fit in the box in the same orientation as the rulebook.
Does it work with sleeved cards?

Maybe? Probably not.

The monster action cards, items, and character attack modifier cards could probably be safely sleeved, but the monster attack modifier cards and other mini cards are too tightly fit in that tiny box.

The larger event cards could probably be sleeved (you might want to stretch the width of the Event Cards models a mm?) but you get a lot more of those cards as the game progresses and I don't know if they will all fit if they are sleeved. I suspect not.

Loading the box:
  • First layer:
    • Character boxes along one side of the box. They'll all perfectly fit and you can see all the symbols. We rarely need these.
    • Along the other side of the box, 12 monster boxes in a column for 3 columns, then a 4th column of 9
    • The secrets envelopes, 3 remaining monster boxes and the UltraPro Boss monster box fit in the remaining space.
    • I put some foam in to reduce shifting and rattling, but it's probably optional
  • Next layer: Cover the monster boxes with:
    • Map
    • Removable sticker set folder
    • Solo Scenarios
    • Alchemy advent chart
    • Puzzle book
    • Welcome to Frosthaven guide
    • Character Party Sheets
    • Rule Book
  • Next layer:
    • Character miniature box holder
    • Standee holder
    • Monster Level cards / sleeves
    • Summer Events (and other large cards)
    • Winter Events (and other large cards)
    • 2 Hero boxes
    • All miniature cards
    • 2 Hero boxes
  • Next layer:
    • Scenario progress advent chart
    • Scenario book, Section Book, Element tracker
    • Original Frosthaven token organizers
    • UltraPro mini card binder pages
