This is a fast printing, fully parameterized cardboard style box.

Why I did this

I made this because I hated to print forever when I needed a little box, like a gift box or a container for srews or whatnot. This model is only 2 layers thick, so it can be printed fast!

How to print this

Crank up the speed! This model can be printed fast, if your printer lets you. Make sure to set your first layer and top surface speed to higher value, because the model only contains of a first layer and a top surface.

The model is designed for 0.2mm layer height. I print them at 100-150 mm/s in PLA on my Prusa Mini, this gives you a box in minutes.

After printing use a spatula to get it off the build plate.

How to use this

Once printed it can be folded like a cardboard box. Simply fold at every folding line, and make it box shapy. Fold the sides and put the taps into the slots at the side. The wings of the lid should fit nicely into the side pockets. Finally, put the top tap into the bottom slot. If you understood nothing, watch this video:

Using the model

I added the Fusion360 model file, so you can design whatever size you like. If you choose to load the model to Fusion360, you will find some parameters under “Modify” > “Change parameters”. Here you can set the size of the box and print to your liking.

Most important parameters are:

  • width: The boxes width
  • depth: The boxes depth
  • height: The boxes height

Make sure the height is smaller than the depth, otherwise the flaps on the lid side are too long and will not go smoothly into the box.

The other parameters might help if you want to tune something like the thickness (for layer height) or the gap between faces.

Join the challenge 🔥

I uploaded a challenge model (foldable_box_54x36x18_challenge.stl). Lets see who can print the fastest challenge box. So really crank up the speed and check what settings will help to make the print quicker. Post a make with your time 👍 As a starting point, heres how long my Prusa Mini took for the challenge:

Fastest reported Time
  • The fastest reported print time is a crazy 8 minutes by j0kers printed on an Ender 3 S1 👏
  • Second fastest reported time is about 9 minutes by Aravon printed on a Bambu Lab X1 👏

You can find these makes in the makes section :)

Have Fun and post a Make ❤
