I had this idea that I wanted something to keep my soldering iron base together with the brass sponge holder. For whatever reason I had decided that it was entirely too much hassle moving these two objects separately so set about designing something to keep them together.
Why not just use the base with the wet sponge and stuff the brass sponge where it belongs you might ask. This is a question I'm asking myself, but I made it, I made a number of revisions, and this was the result. So I'm sharing it. As an added bonus it can also store spare tips in the base, so it has that going for it.
To be honest, I actually prefer the stand-alone brass sponge holder. It's far easier to move the sponge around in there versus the cavity for it on the iron stand.
This also leaves the cavity open so you can use franpoli's magnetic tip holder.
Then came the naming challenge. Should I call it the:
So many choices, but I think I made the right choice in the end.
I printed this in Black and Clear PETG.
The base can print without supports, but I had a heck of a time with it lifting from the print bed. Even with a 15mm brim it still ended up lifting so I think this would print better in an enclosure.
The top portion prints easy enough, but some supports are useful when using PETG.
