Description:

Constraints:

  • Must be 60mm OD
  • Must be printable without supports
  • Must be a challenging print
  • gear/sprocket inspired design

My model has a theme on infinity and is inspired by the Team Unlimited Makercoin by Karelias(https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3459231). The infinity logo was based on this image from Istock(https://www.istockphoto.com/photos/infinity-symbol)

This is the initial concept sketch for the part:

Most of the features are patterned to create symmetry and to make it easier to edit. The infinity is extruded up but does not reach the rim of the coin to create a more dynamic surface. All edges are fileted to create a smoother surface and to increase corner strength. The logo is also engraved on the bottom of the part to test bed adhesion.

Design Evolution:

I started by creating the exact design that I sketched with minor edits to the top surface and some added filets

The main body was made with a revolve, and the top and bottom patterns were built from a sketch on the top surface of the coin. A revolve cut was used to create the small indents on both the edge and the top surface of the coin.

After printing out this design I went back and wanted to have a more complicated design that created a more unique look. In order to do this I cut sectors from the top of the model and changed the filets for the top. I also added some variable fillets though due to the small radii difference, they are hard to see.

The new design is a lot smoother, and a lot more visually interesting. These renders were completed using Photoviewer 360 in Solidworks.
