Got an old ceiling lamp and missing some proper design shades? You can print them!

The design consists of 5 identical pentagon shades, which form a pentagon perimeter when completed. They can be easily modified and cut into the desired height. In case you need a larger length than your printer can produce, there is an extension part which can be glued to the base part.

  • Can be used in variable configurations as a single pentagonal shade up to a configuration of five (on the photo).
  • There is also an alternative shade with regular pentagonal shape especially intended for 1 or more bulbs in line.
  • No supports required
  • The print on the photo is with E27 7W LED light bulbs and white PLA filament
  • The wall thickness of the shade is 0.6 mm which seems to be reasonably translucent (it was measured it attenuates the emitted light flux to around 1/3).
  • For more heat emitting light sources, a higher temperature-resistant filament is needed

The 3D model was created using Autodesk Fusion 360.

Print instructions

Instructions for modifications

  • Height adjustments can be made directly in slicing software
  • In PrusaSlicer: Object manipulation -> Unlock Scale factors -> Change Z.
  • The step above will affect also the thickness of the base plate. Desired thickness can be obtained by using the "Cut" function.

Instructions for printing

  • Prints well using PrusaSlicer default profile 0.20mm SPEED with 0.4mm nozzle
  • Prints also well using twice the speed used in the default profile (tested on Prusa MINI)

Print files

  • Shade-single-tall.stl : Tall single shade (21 cm) taking advantage of maximum printing height of MK3s
  • Shade-single-tall_mini.stl : Tall single shade (18 cm) taking advantage of maximum printing height of PRUSA Minii
  • Shade-single-short.stl (13.5 cm): Minimum height covering E27 socket (6cm) and a typical light bulb (7cm measured without socket). This file is also suitable for height adjustments (see below). The filament used to print this part is about 73g.
  • Shade-extension.stl (10.6 cm incl. rim). The extension mounts to any of the Shade-single files.
  • Shade-pentagon-regular.stl (18 cm). A regular pentagon shade, which can be used in other configuration with 1+ lamps.
