This is an insert / organizer for Great Western Trail 2d ed. and the Rails to the North expansion. It all fits in the base box, has no lid lift (as long as your player boards are flat), supports premium sleeves on the cards (Gamegenic Prime sleeves shown in the images), supports vertical storage when storing both the base game and expansion, and was designed to aid setup and teardown. Here are some features of the insert:
* Individual player trays, which hold each player’s starting deck, 2/3 player overlay tile, private building tiles, discs, cowboy meeple with hat, engine, certificate markers, Rails to the North branchlet buildings, and Rails to the North auxiliary board.
* Two money/exchange token trays, one for each end of the table.
* Separate card trays that can be placed on the table during setup, depending on which variants you are using, including:
* Three setup trays, including:
* A solo tray that holds the base game solo cards and the solo cards from Rails to the North.
To achieve the insert as shown, print four player trays, two money/exchange token trays, and one of everything else. The board spacer that fits next to the player boards is optional. I don’t think it is necessary, but it will prevent the boards from shifting left to right in the box. I did a vigorous upside-down shake test, and everything stays in place regardless of whether you use the optional board spacer.
The images show how to layer everything in the box, as well as providing closer images of the trays.
I have included the original OpenSCAD files in case anyone wants to improve on the design.
Edit April 22, 2023: In response to a great comment from a BGG user, I posted a consolidated money and exchange token tray. It should more readily accommodate larger coins, such as the third-party metal coins used by several GWT fans. If you would like to use this option, print one of “GWT2e Money and Exchange Tokens (Alt - Single Larger Tray) (Final) x1” instead of printing two of “GWT2e Money and Exchange Tokens (Final) x2.”
