There's already a remix of this set that uses Euro cents as weights, but after pricing out similarly sized washers I realized I'd be much better off trying to make US pennies work. Scaling the other set resulted in pieces much larger than I wanted that also needed 11 pennies each - the result was heavy enough to be painful if dropped on your toes.

Along the way, I resized the bases so that all the royalty pieces were the same size as each other - approx. 33 mm (give or take the little details on the sides). The pawns are a little smaller, with 27mm bases. I also fixed some internal geometry issues in the Rook. Each piece needs 4 US pennies (which will add 10g of weight), so the whole set will use $1.36 in pennies if you print an extra queen for each side.

Print settings:

  • Layer height: 0.2mm
  • Supports: none (your slicer may complain there are large overhangs because of the penny cavity. That is intentional.)
  • You will need to pause the prints at approximately 7.2mm to insert the pennies. It's best to add them one at a time and make sure they are fully flat before putting in the next - the cavity has very small tolerances so that the pennies do not rattle around in the piece.
