Nyan Cat Spacebar Keycap for Cherry MX.

Customization

The current spacebar model should work fine for most cases. However, the design model has been included as a separate STL for those wishing to make your own custom versions.

The easiest way to print your own version would be to use the slicer software (i.e. Cura) to position the design model on top of an empty spacebar model.

As for getting an empty spacebar model, I recommend using rsheldiii's OpenSCAD keycap model generator from ThingiVerse: KeyV2: Parametric Mechanical Keycap Library. This is a fantastic library that facilitates the generation of keycaps of any shape and size as well as adding supports for easier printing. I included a modified copy with some preset parameters for convenience.

OpenSCAD  Instructions

OpenSCAD is a free software that facilitates parametric 3D modeling. If you are unfamiliar with OpenSCAD, I really encourage you to try it out. Just follow these steps to start generating your own custom models:

  1. Download and install OpenSCAD (its free!): https://openscad.org/downloads.html
  2. Open the model file with OpenSCAD. These typically use the “.scad” extension.
  3. Adjust the model parameters in the “Customizer” section as desired.
    • The “Customizer” section will be visible by default on right side of the window.  If not, it can be toggled through the top menu (Window=>Customizer)
    • Some parameters you might likely want to adjust include:
      • "stem slop" for tolerance
      • "stem support type" for adhesion issues
      • "total depth" for the height of the key
      • “top skew”
      • “corner radius” for sharper or rounder corners
  4. Press F5 (or the “Preview” button at the top menu) to preview the model.
  5. Press F6 (or the “Render” button at the top menu) to generate the model.
  6. Press F7 (or the “Export to STL” button at the top menu) to save the exported STL to your computer.
