Makercoin Report

Summary Section:

  • Given the constraints, I wanted to create a makercoin reminiscent of a gear. I also wanted to incorporate the concept that if you had multiple makercoins, they could intermesh and actually function as gears.
  • I also wanted to personalize the makercoin in some way with a logo, design, or Initials

I used this photo as inspiration for my design:

Lesson Plan and Activity:

  • Create makercoin from an initial revolve resulting in a coin that is 6cm in diameter and 1.25cm in thickness.
  • Must not require ANY supports, (no supports).
  • Must slope downwards towards the center in some fashion.
  • Must be gear-esque in nature.
  • NO moving parts

Design Choices:

  • Based on my reference photo I created a simple paper sketch to plan how I would create the makercoin. (This first sketch was extremely close to my final design)

  • In Solidworks, I initially started with a simple sketch of the side I would later revolve. The dimensions were set to fit the constraints of the project. This sketch incorporated the sloping edge of the gear teeth, the curved inside edge, and a depressed circle in the middle where my "design" would go.

Once revolved it looked like this:

  • I then used the extruded cut and circular pattern tools to create "negatives" for the gear teeth.

  • On the inside of my depressed circle I then added my text. I really like this font and it gave the whole maker coin "The Cars Movie Vibes"
  • After this was done I created the smaller teeth surrounding the text. This was meant to look like it would mesh with some other tool. This was done with a simple extrude, and then a circular pattern.

  •  I had some trouble with the circular pattern so instead of adding the patterns, I created separate bodies which I then combined into the main part of the makercoin
  • I also added the small line underneath the text because I felt the text alone was not defined enough.

  • My final touch was adding the year, 2023, to the bottom, and adding fillets and chamfers to (almost) every surface.
