Desktop FUME EXTRACTOR
See: pdf for Parts List and Assembly Instructions

A COMPACT 3D Filament or Resin printer fume sucker built around a common 120mm Blower Fan.

I have a small work area for my printers in my office. I like to see whats going on when printing. I don't have the room, or like enclosures due to many reasons, so I set about making a desktop extractor which can sit next to my filament printer making my environment a little safer.

I have built this extractor around a common 120mm blower fan I had spare. It is 12V system and quite powerful, actually damn thing nearly flies off the table, so I incorporated a 12V DC PWM Controller to adjust fan speed to my liking. You don't need to do this if you have a weaker fan and want it to run it at 100%.

NEED TO KNOWS:

  • My parts list and Assembly Instructions (pdf) are included to assist, but adjust as your needs suit.
  • Assembly instructions included with photos.
  • Fan housing cavity suits a retail 120mm x 120mm x 33mm common blower fan.
  • Fan housing is set on a 15deg backwards slant.
  • 3 options for the front grill
    1. Plain mesh
    2. Funnel - open (aka the finger eater)
    3. Funnel - closed with mesh
I recommend the funnel if you have a higher powered blower as I have found this reduces the usual blow back
  • Use M3 to secure the fan (through the fan and fan housing into control box M3 knurled nuts. See parts list.
  • I advise using a 4.5mm drill to clean the M3 knurled nut holes in prep for the M3 knurled nuts. If you force them straight in after printing, with filament shrinkage etc you may crack the walls while inserting them. Its worth the time after printing such an item.
  • The extractor hose is a common 32mm OD flexible hose available from any hardware store.
  • I have uploaded the power box housing I have used with my components, but also a blank power box housing so you can drill your own holes (carefully) to suit your own power components.
  • Place some non-slip pads under the two front feet and the rear support to stop it sliding around the desk, or flying away

Update 15/02/2023
Tidied up mesh on Fumeater Front Grill Scoop with Mesh - please reprint if used prior.

Update 27/03/2023
I have added a ‘32mm Flexy Tube Face Plate’. The purpose of this was to be part of the             extraction system on another design, but this may come in handy if you wish to utilise.
Check out how I use it my other extraction system here; https://www.printables.com/model/283993-elegoo-saturn-2-and-saturn-3-vent-system
