The Frog Prince is a very old fairy tale, although the most famous retelling is from the Brothers Grimm's collection published in the 19th century.
A rather spoiled princess strikes a bargain with a talking frog, who she meets after losing her golden ball in a pond. She promises to take the frog as her companion if he will return it to her. This talking frog is in fact a handsome prince under an enchantment of an evil fairy. This spell can only be broken if the fair princess keeps the promise she made.
In the story by the Brothers Grimm the transformation occurs when the princess throws the poor frog against the wall of her bedroom - in later versions, she kisses the frog. My model shows the frog, clasping the golden ball close to him. I decorated the ball in a style which I thought would appeal to a spoiled princess. The cushion is based on the "crown cushions" used in displays of royal jewels and thick with gold embroidery.
