Puzzle Topper for Gift boxes

3D Printy came up recently with a great Print-in-Place Twisty Puzzle Box

I thought it could be fun to use this puzzle as a topper for 3D print Twist Lock Present boxes.

I remixed the gear of the internal mechanism of the Twist Lock Present box so it could be open by the key of the Print-in-Place Twisty Puzzle Box. 

I redesign a case (simple version for now) to use it as a topper of this gift box in such a way the box could only be opened once you solve this Print-in-Place Twisty Puzzle to access the mechanism to open the gift box with the same key as the puzzle.

You could use this puzzle topper on any of 3D Printy gift boxes. 

If you want to really challenge your friends when you offer them a gift, you could put this gift in a puzzle within a gift box with this puzzle topper so you have 2 puzzles to solve before getting to the gift (my favorite option is to use the simple version to open the box and a difficult version within the box).

UPDATE v2 - February 2023

I did both the simple and complex versions of the Print in place puzzle.

I added a simple sketch of both solutions in case you need it.

To improve the look I added a version with “Open Me !” on the cylinder.

I also did 2 specific keys to open the puzzle which looks and could be used combined with using the Xmas Tree case and my Remix of the Moai case. These are stronger keys but will come with 2 pieces.

PRINTING 

• All 3MF files should have the right configuration for printing
• no support needed
• PLA is working fine for all pieces
• once you have printed the gear + cover + topper puzzle case + internal puzzle + key you will have to choose a gift box to print
• I did a smooth and low poly case version, choose the one you like better.

ASSEMBLY

• Select and print a twist lock gift box and please refer to 3D Printy Twist Lock Present for assembly of the box

• use this new gear to assemble the gift box opening mechanism
• once the lid mechanism is done, glue the cover on top of the gear. There are 3 guides for the assembly of the gear and the top to be aligned for the insertion of the key.
• Glue the case on the lid of the gift box centered around the gear
• You will then have to assemble the puzzle (I put an image of the solution)

To open the box you will have to solve the puzzle, remove the internal mechanism, insert the key in the cover and turn to open the box.
