I have created this tray for the Printables Catch-All Trays contest (January 2023).
This two tier tray use bearings and shaft to smootly rotate the top part.
Moreover the top and bottom trays contains magnets which hold the top tray is selected positions. Acoording to the number of used magnets the top tray can have 1-5 magneticaly locked positions.
Selecting difefrent colors for both trays and inlay you can match your home or office style.
Print the test piece to verify hole size with your printer and selected material. The dowel needs to have very tight fit, bearings and magnets snug fit.
If needed slightly adjust the size of the top and bottom trays in the slicer
Print settings: 0.2mm layer height, 20% infill, 3 perimeters, no support
Print the bottom tray (Tray_Bottom.stl), insert magnet during the print, if the hole for magnet is loose glue the magnet before resuming the print otherwise the magnet can stick to the printer head.
Print the top tray (Tray_Top.stl), insert 1-5 magnets according to requested positions. Pay attention to magnet orientation!
Print the bearing distance part (Bearing_Distance.stl)
Print the inlay (Tray_Bottom_Inlay.stl), it can be also used as template to cut felt, leather, …
Assembly:
If you use 8mm steel rod cut it to 40mm length
Check the steel rod or dowel fits smoothly inside the bearing, if not use drill and emery paper to reduce the diameter little bit
Press first bearing into the bottom tray
Press bearing distance into the bottom tray
Press second bearing into the bottom tray
Optionally: Cut the inlay from felt, leather or otehr material you want to use
Glue the inlay inside the bottom part
Glue rubber feet from the bottom
Press the dowel to the top part
Assembly both top and bottom part together and put the washer in the middle
