Couldn't find any spool holders that take less space, wouldn't affect operations, and still being able to be mounted on to the frame, hence I decided to design my own.

I have tested out on a few prints, it may not be the smoothest, but it has no adverse effects on print quality.

Do let me know if you face any issues, and I will try my best to assist.

Disclaimer

  • Do note subject build is a prototype. I have some plans to improve the design, and also to include different rod sizes to fit different spool types.
  • **The filament guide may cause noise during extrusion when tension is increased by the extruder, causing the tensioned filament to scrape against the filament guide, generating a loud screech. You can reduce this effect by placing the spool closer to the left axis, thus putting less strain and less noise is produced.

Designed in reference

  • Designed using 1.75mm filament, 1kg spool, Prusa I3 MK3S+.
  • Part designed in Solidworks and prototype sliced in Prusaslicer
  • If you are printing this for other models/printers, please do check for compatibility.

Printing guidelines

  • Any materials
  • 15% infill or above
  • Perimeters min. 2
  • layer height 0.2 - 0.3mm
  • No supports needed
  • **Prototype was printed in 0.3mm layer height, 5% infill with PLA and PETG. No deformities was observed.

Slicing

  • Orientate parts so there's no overhang.
  • Print spool holder body with the honeycomb side down.
  • Print knob with the flat side down.
  • Do check for the correct side of the spool disk, as one of the sides contains a step.
  • Note: Spool holder body cross locking extrusion and tail radius may have some droops due to the bridging. However, it will not cause any fitting issues. I will be updating the cross locking design into a hexagon in the near future to fix this.

Assembly

  • Assemble spool disk onto the body. the top surface of the 2 joint parts should be flush with no protrusions.
  • Use the cross pattern on the knob to secure and lock the assembly.

Happy printing!
