On a recent trip to London, I went to the Victoria and Albert Museum, and these vases really stood out to me.

These are Persian blue pottery vases from the Safavid period. During this time, westerners were infatuated with Chinese blue porcelain, becoming less interested with the more traditional Persian pottery from previous periods. In order to compete, potters borrowed a lot of the style of Chinese porcelain makers. Since I've now lost track of who stole what from who… I stole the style from these vases and made my own 3D printed version.

If you print this, I highly encourage you to fill it with your own pattern. I used an oil paint marker, and just went to town.

I will be using mine to display some dried flowers… or I guess maybe just some origami ones. Plus, it's festive! People love flowers.

Print settings

You know… this one is not as restrictive as my other models. Do whatever you want. But… at least do it in vase mode. Here are the settings I used:

  • Spiral vase mode / Spiralize outer contour: turn this on, that's what this mode is all about
  • Line width / Extrusion width: 0.8mm (you can do this even with a 0.4mm nozzle)
  • Layer height: 0.3mm
  • Bottom thickness / Bottom layers: 1.2mm or 4 layers at 0.3mm layers

Notes

The print in the photos was printed on an Elegoo Neptune 2 with a 0.4mm nozzle in PolyTerra Matte Sapphire Blue, then hand painted using a Sharpie brand while oil marker. I'd be interested in seeing the reverse… a white vase painted in blue.
