The is a tough case designed to protect a Dial Test Indicator (DTI) based on the “Rugged Box v2” by Whity, which in turn was based on the  "Tool box parametric" by Yanev

The whole case is tiny, just 92mm by 67mm by 33mm, enough for one small DTI.

A summary of the main changes from Whity and Yaney's original brilliant designs:

  • Shrank the whole model to be smaller than the previous parametric settings would take it.
  • Changed the metal screws to bamboo rods (and made all the holes same size).
  • Built up all the internals to hold the DTI by its dovetail, you may need to modify the features at the end of the history tree to make your DTI fit, or roll them back if you just want an empty box.
  • Stronger hinges.
  • Rebuilt and simplified the whole Fusion360 model. - not all of the changes are improvements!… I used this project to learn Fusion 360.
  • Lots of little cosmetic changes to latches and ribs to make them work this small.

Assembly Instructions

I printed in PETG with 50% infill. Support on, helps to keep the holes round.

I've replaced all the screws with Bamboo Skewers - Mine are about 2.9mm diameter, this worked fine as an interference fit, some are 3mm some are 3.2mm so you might or get the skewers first and modify the hole size. Push the skewer into the hinge and latch holes and cut flush with side cutters.

Colour the end of the skewers with a sharpie and add a dot of super glue to secure.

Cut a disk of 1mm thick craft foam to protect the lens of the DTI.

Optional: Push some 1.75mm diameter silicone into the slot to make the o-ring cut to length with a scalpel.
