Gridfinity adapter for Ikea Samla box 5l

I love the gridfinity system started by Zack Freedman and the design idea of easy accessibility and of displaying the stuff that is stored, rather than store it away. But I felt that until now an easy way of transporting more than a few boxes at a time was lacking.

Ikea Samla boxes seemed a perfect fit. They are transparent, thus keeping the possibility to easily see what's inside, stackable and easily transportable.

Inside a 5l Samla box (28x19x14 cm) fits a 3x4 grid and you can stack 5 3U high divider bins. Easily transportable storage for small projects.

What do you need to print

There are two options: The once piece SamlaBaseplate_5l or the modular baseplate 3x4 + the adapters.

• For the one piece option you only need to print the SamlaBaseplate_5l.stl and you are good to go.
• For the three piece option you need to print one time the ModularBaseplate_3x4.stl and two times the SamlaModularBaseplateAdapter_5l.stl.

Assembly

• Screw in m3x6 ferromagnetic flat head coutersunk screws (FHCS) into the tapered holes in the 3x4 baseplate, so bins with magnets will hold perfectly on the baseplate. Note that by using magnets on the bins and ferromagnetic screws on the baseplates you don't need to think about the polarity of the magnets in the bins. This step is optional.
• For the one piece version no additional assembly is needed.

• For the three piece version: Use 8 m3x12 button head cap screws (BHCS) and 8 m3 hex nuts to attach the two adapters to the 3x4 modular baseplate

• Place the assembly in the Ikea Samla box.
• You also have the possibility to glue the assembly to the Ikea Samla box. You can do this via superglue if you want to attach it permanently or via hotglue if you want to remove the baseplates easily.
