Rabbit/Ferret Cage Shelf Plug
by RebelTaz
We bought this cage ( https://www.walmart.com/ip/Polar-Aurora-50-H-4-Tier-Steel-Plastic-Deluxe-Small-Animal-Pet-Cage-Kit/718260167 ) -or- ( https://www.amazon.com/Plastic-Deluxe-Hammock-Removable-Flannel/dp/B09P67847 ) for our rabbit. It is made for small animals, like a ferret, and it has holes in the shelves that the animal is supposed to climb through using the ramps. Our rabbit is huge compared to the targeted inhabitants of this cage so there is no way that she could fit her fat self through these tiny holes.
To keep her from trying and hurting herself, I designed plugs for the holes. They are a slightly loose fit, so I beveled the edges, thinking she couldn't get them out. Boy was I wrong. She figured out how to get them out so I secured them with a couple of dabs of hot glue on each plug where the edge of the shelf meets the plug. She hasn't gotten them out since; she can't get the glue; and she can now walk on the shelves with no trouble or danger.
I designed in bracing underneath, but I still recommend printing these with 4 to 6 walls (1.2 - 1.6mm thick) and 9999 bottom layers. This creates a strong, 100% infill without the drawbacks of actually using infill.
