I needed a new spool holder that fit the following criteria:

can hold a 2kg spool (or any really large or wide spool)

spool can be slid off and on, no screws or caps or anything, yet will not fall off

free standing

So, I came up with this. It is extra tall and the filament support "rod" is extra long, but the unique thing about it is that the rod has a slight upward angle to it so the spool can't fall off. Because there's no "lip" at the end like most spool holders, I can fit even tiny spools that otherwise would get hung up on the "end bump".

I printed this in eSun ABS+, but it would work in PETG or PLA as long as you use enough perimeters for it to be strong enough to hold the largest spool you have. I used 4 perimeters with gyroid infill at 10%.

I designed it so that no supports would be needed for printing as well.

UPDATE 1/7/22: added a new model that has a filet and small arch at the arm connection point to strengthen it.  Also added a 3MF that has a modifier to make the connection point solid, again, for strength.  The 3MF is also set to print at 0.3mm, saving 5 hours of printing!

UPDATE 1/21/22: added a lip at the end of the rod to prevent spools from working their way off.  Also, cleaned up the fillet which joins the arm to the body.  Added 3MF file with V4 model (including modifier to print the arm connection point as solid)

UPDATE 9/6/22: added 7mm of height for larger spools

Print instructions

no supports, print with 3 or more perimeters for strength (as set in the 3MF).
