I now have a growing number of printers and have growing concern about particulate microplastics and VoCs from printing with various polymers in my printing space. So, I wanted a reasonably quiet, always-on air filter.

I selected some components that, I think, should be freely available in many countries and designed some parts to make them work well together.

For the HEPA and Activated Carbon filters, I'm using Zortrax filters, which seem reasonably available in the EU, but are harder to find in the USA, but I did find a source.

The fan/blower appears to be the perfect size, and I found it on Amazon. The beautiful thing about this fan/blower is that it comes with a power supply and a potentiometer for speed control.

The parts I designed include an attractive case and funnel. The spec'ed parts fit perfectly well together, but if you need to use alternatives, I'm also including the 3D model in Fusion 360 format and STEP files so you can make adjustments.

Parts to acquire:

Parts to print:

  • The main body of the case - easy to print at 0.2mm layer height
  • The case cover - easy to print upside down at 0.2mm layer height
  • The air funnel - easy to print upside down at 0.2mm layer height

I used PLA, but I can't see why any other material wouldn't work.

I also attached 4 tiny rubber feet on the bottom to isolate any vibrations from the surface I place it on.
