Put together a Dayton C Note speaker kit and print the cabinets to avoid clamping, sanding, staining, painting, and other annoying woodworking tasks!

The cabinet is designed to fit exactly inside the MK3 print volume, which results in a 7.4L sealed internal volume as compared to the 9.0L ported volume of the knock down cabinets in the kit. The cabinet changes don't actually reduce bass output by much, and performance is extremely similar to the stock design. See the full write up on Reddit for more info.

Construction notes:

  • M4 screws are used to mount the drivers, feet, and rear panel. The drivers are clamped solidly to the front panel with M4 nuts, but the screws in the feet and rear panel are screwed directly into the plastic.
  • A bead of wood glue or similar is recommended to seal the rear panel to the cabinet.
  • The feet are tough to get perfectly aligned and easy to slightly twist, so the speakers tend to not sit perfectly flat. This results in rattling with heavy bass, so it is a good idea to put felt pads or similar under the feet.

Print like you would any other large model, whatever works best for you for bed adhesion and minimal warping. The Draft preset works well, but you may want to increase the number of perimeters if you are worried about strength/stiffness. Supports are only needed for the recessed front panel around the tweeter.

The speakers in the project photos use a black and blue two color filament for the first layer, with a hilbert curve bottom solid infill pattern. A .3mf file with PrusaSlicer settings, supports, seam, and color changes if you want a similar look. Hilbert bottom solid layers tend to underextrude by quite a bit, so it may take some trial and error to dial in your z calibration, extrusion multiplier, etc.

A STEP file is included if you want to make adjustments.

As long as the cabinet is sealed the D Note design is very tolerant of volume and porting. Full report and measurements showing the practical impacts here → https://www.reddit.com/r/diyaudio/comments/101fwos/d_notes_dayton_c_notes_with_3d_printed_cabinets/
