Introduction

A round Christmas ornament that can have customized text on the back to create gifts for family, friends, and neighbors!

My family gives away Christmas cards each year, and wanted to do something a bit more meaningful for closer friends and family.  I designed a Christmas ornament with a traditional front face and a back face debossed with a personalized message from my family.  The competition file has a generic message.  The ornament is designed to be printed with up to a 0.6 mm nozzle to facilitate quick printing (about 37 minutes and 3 color changes).  I printed more than 30 of them this year (usually printing six at a time).

To facilitate presenting a classy gift, the ornament is designed to fit inside classic jewelry boxes, such as this one on Amazon (not an affiliate link).

The ribbon hole is 4 mm in diameter and can probably accommodate ribbons up to 8 mm wide.

Customizing the Message on the Back

Open the Christmas Ornament Contest 2022.f3d file in Autodesk Fusion 360.  Edit the "back text" sketch to add your custom message.  Keep in mind shorter messages and bold type will print more effectively, particularly with the 0.6 mm nozzle.

Slicer Settings

There is a pre-sliced file for Prusa Mk3s+ printers with a 0.6 mm nozzle.  If you prefer to slice it yourself, it is recommended to print at 0.2 mm layer height, as the ornament was designed with color changes laid out on exact multiples of 0.2 mm.   The color changes are at the following heights:

  • 0.6 mm
  • 1.0 mm
  • 2.2 mm

The “Joy to the World” on the front of the ornament prints nicer with the classic perimeter generator algorithm instead of the new Arachne perimeter generator.

The pre-sliced gcode and .3mf files include a small manual “purge block” to help ensure color changes do not result in extra material blobs on the actual print.
