An owl can help teach us about 3D printing and mechanical engineering. This model features a print-in-place mechanism that allows the bird\u2019s head to rotate. Designed to be 3D printed without any support material, this model utilizes techniques for optimized 3D printing.

A circular pattern of sweeping pillars creates a wireframe mesh that makes up the body of the bird. Featuring elegant curvatures, the mesh allows one to see through the body to appreciate the internal support structure that keeps the head separated from the body. The internal support structure embodies a swirling texture that eludes the act of spinning, rotation and twisty connotations.

Designed to be played with, one can puppeteer the owl by using the built-in handle on the bottom of the internal structure. The design invites the user to take control of the creature and give it expression by rotating the head as the user interacts with it.

Triangular textures adorn the two wings on the sides of the body. More triangles are used in the neck invoking a collar that resembles a bird's feathered mane. A pair of eyes, a modest sized beek and sleek eyebrows remark the simplicity of the owl\u2019s iconic appearance.
