Introduction

This is my first attempt at 3D modelling, and true to tradition, I decided on a makercoin. I put all the stuff I love into this: gears, cats, multi-colour prints, and hex nut insets. The result is about 8mm thick, mostly due to the hex nuts needing 3mm insets.

How to make

The pictures show a print using KiwiFil rPETG. The colours I used were Electric Blue for the coin body and Black for the outline and cat face. You can use PLA if you prefer, which KiwiFil also have.

Recommended settings:

  • 0.2mm layer height
  • 20% infill (but it really doesn't matter)
  • No supports (doesn't need them)
  • No brim or raft (doesn't need it)
  • 2 perimeters (but you can use more if you want)

For the colour change, assuming 0.2mm layer height, insert a change command at layer 31 (6.2mm up). I recommend a 0.4mm nozzle; a 0.6mm might work, but there are some thin lines (such as the bridge of the glasses) that might not print well with one. I used a 0.4mm nozzle for mine.

If you want to insert the nuts into the back, useM3 hex nuts. They should fit fairly snugly, but I haven't tried screwing anything into them. They're meant to be decorative anyway.
