Hello,

This is a compliant mechanism that can be used for percise positioning in two directions.

The dimensions of the Compliant XY-Positioning Device are approx. 69 x 61 x 8 mm

The range of motion in X is approx. 1 mm;

the range of motion in Y is approx. 2 mm.

The mounting holes on the side have a diameter of 3 mm; the mounting hole in the center has a diameter of 4 mm.

How should you print it?

The Compliant XY-Positioning Device consists of only one part and can be printed in around 2.5 hours without supports. I recommend a 0.2 mm layer height, a 20% gyroid infill (you can use a higher infill to make it even more durable if you like) and PLA.

How do you assemble it?

You need the following parts:

  • 2 x Screw M3
  • 2 x Nut M3
  • 1 x Printed mechanism
  • 1 x Knife or scalpel
  1. Use your knife or scalpel to cut through the thin wall on the side of the mechanism. This will create an elongated hole. Be careful not to cut yourself!
  2. Insert the M3 nuts in the mechanism. Make sure that one of the edges points downwards. Otherwise you will not be able to fully insert the nuts.
  3. Screw the M3 screws in the nuts, until they come in contact with the levers.

How do you use it?

If you screw the screws towards the lever (clockwise), it will move the center with the 4 mm mounting hole in it. If you screw the screws in the other direction (counterclockwise) you move the center in the other direction until it reaches it's original position.

Please note: 3D printed compliant mechanisms can be brittle depending on your print settings and material used!
