The model - moving parts

Background

This model was created for a small competition how life on mars could be supported. The mars base takes care of some peculiarities of the life on Mars:

  • Irradiation: The thick layer of material on top protects the inhabitants.
  • Low outside temperature: The double walls contain superinsulation. It isolates the inner space. The inhabitants together with the equipment generate enough heat to keep the room warm.
  • Air: The spherical shape is best to withstand pressure. (lowest material strain, less material needed)
  • Dust/storms: The structure is underground and protected.
  • Energy: Sun-following solar cells generate power.

Shipment: In the beginning, the mars base could consist of few modules, one living quarter (shown) and one for facilities. Once more modules have arrived from earth, they can be connected to form a network. (For this, front and back hatches can be selected)
The models print without any support. The scale is 1:100.

You can see the base and their hinges in action on youtube
The hinges of Mathgrrl's fidget cube were used as a basis. Thanks!

Customization

Many aspects are customizable using OpenSCAD:

  • The size of the main compartment
  • Wall and insulation layer thickness (currently optimized for printing), Floor position
  • Entry/exit tube diameter, Number of ports to other modules
  • Number of inhabitants and their height
  • Thickness of the material on top of the station (the hill)
  • Number of machines inside
  • Decide to include the ladder, door, pillars, solar cells, the walls, etc
    Have fun!

Print instructions

The models print without support.
(Use PLA with standard settings, Infill 10%, 2 Shells, 0.2mm layer height)

The moving doors will stick a bit after printing. Apply gentle force to free them.
Currently the distance between the moving doors and the station is 0.3mm. You can customize the distance using OpenSCAD if you encounter issues using other printers/slicers.
