I loved the idea of the Laptop Saver cup holder (link below), but it wasn't quite what I wanted so I made my own, inspired by it. I suggest you check out that model before printing this one, it might be more to your taste. This model needs glue.

This model is chunkier (for larger mugs), with a bigger screw knob, trapezoidal screw threads and it can all be printed flat on the bed. It does, however, require glue.

Print suggestions:

  • Use 3 or more perimeters, and sufficient infill (I went with 25% gyroid)
  • print the threaded parts (screw and clamp bottom) separately at a fairly high quality setting (I went with .15 layer height) and upright (see screenshot)
  • print the remaining parts at lower detail, the cup holder part is large and will take a while, but do use sufficient perimeters and infill
  • I used PETG, PLA is too brittle and will droop over time (pictured: Prusament recycled PETG). If you are using ABS, you might want to scale down the threaded parts (screw and clamp bottom) slightly to get more clearance, say 95%
  • adding some rubber to the top clamp and screw end parts makes it a lot more stable once mounted

Assembly:

  1. after printing all the parts, slide the “clamp top” part into the cup holder with the flat side on the bottom (see image)
  2. slide the “clamp bottom” behind it, with the threaded part at the bottom
  3. if they fit, slide them out again and use glue (e.g. medium cyanoacrylate) to glue them in place; make sure they are assembled tightly and the joint is strong
  4. screw in the screw, and clip the "screw end" piece onto it (this will require force); some silicone grease or similar may help
