My kids aren't going to remember to put a remote back in the holder; now they don't have to!
This build takes the spring from a tape measure. Be warned! these springs are not easy to work with and remove. I used a free tape measure from Harbor Freight.
The spring goes into the slit in the center post on the housing. There's a hole on either side for the string, depending on which way your spring rotates. I just used hot glue to attach the spool cap (to isolate the spring) and the housing top.
Use some Command strips to attach it where you want: on the wall, under the coffee table, or wherever!
