I played around with the parameters of my old design http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1216198 a bit and actually got it printable. I had to reduce image resolution and contrast and added a border to get rid of the parts that always get too small. The sphere is also not flattened anymore, instead the top is cut off to have a flat surface and rotated to lie on the print bed. I printed the dog in 0.1mm resolution and Mona Lisa even in 0.3mm, this is working fine without the need for support.
The customizer takes pictures with 55x55 pixels. The preview is a little buggy, but the rendered files are fine. Higher resolution requires a bigger radius, this scales about linear, so to have twice the resolution twice the radius is required so details will not get too small. For this you can download the scad file locally and create the image array with this script: http://jsfiddle.net/threonin/6dr8qu41/
I used Simplify3D for slicing, Slic3r also seems to be able to handle it.
A high res version with 85x85 pixels is here: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1923764

Supports:
No
Resolution:
0.3mm
Notes:
All parts are printed at 100%. I maxed out resolution for the given diameter, so it is still sliceable in Simplify3D. Other slicers are able to scale it down, but you may get issues with very thin walls if you go too low.
