In several books you may find a photo of a Thornycroft steam wagon loaded with an furniture road-rail container of “William Whiteley Ltd. London” and dated back to 1903. So far this is the earliest evidence of a container transported on motorized vehicle I could find. However at this time many trucks should already been withdrawn from war time service to several British railways and it can be assumed, that these were also used to transport similar road-rail containers.

For building one model, you need at least:
1x chassis (normal or long)
1x steam boiler
2x wheels aft
1x wheel fore (straight, turning left or right)
1x platform (normal or long, as per chassis)
optional driver figure
optional the furniture container 

For filling the coal bunker I use model coal made by Busch 7071:
