The Sword Sting from The Hobbit and LOTR: Also Pen

Introduction

"I will give you a name... and I shall call you Sting."

Forged in Gondolin for the goblin wars, this sword was used extensively in the prestigious careers of the burglar Bilbo Baggins and his nephew, Frodo Baggins; as any Lord of the Rings fan could tell you. This highly simplified iteration of this blade was designed for one such fan. This was originally intended to serve as a pen, but the tolerances were off and the pen did not fit. The fan was amazed anyway. Keep in mind that this is a work in progress and some tolerances may be off. If you find anything wrong with these files please comment so that I can fix it. Here's how it is made:

Instructions

1. Print the files, sand the prints, you know the drill.
2. Make sure the sword fits into the scabbard fully. If it does, great. Continue. If it doesn't, sand until it does. Continue.
3. Make sure the pommel fits on the end of the hilt. If it does, great. Continue. If it doesn't, sand until it does. Continue.
4. Remove pen insert from a retractable. HAND SAND the ridges near the bottom off. Cutting or dremel-ing it will likely result in a giant mess of ink!
5. Remove pommel and insert pen into hole in the bottom of the hilt. Continue to insert pen until the pommel will fit back on the hilt. Once the desired insertion has been reached, superglue in place.
6. Wait for the glue to dry

Congratulations! You are now the owner of your very own Sting Pen! Here's how I painted mine:

1. Spray paint sword and pommel silver
2. Paint with acrylics
3. Spray with enamel
4. Repeat with scabbard

Depending on your level of skill with painting, you should have a sword pen that looks at least somewhat like mine and the original!

Some Various Notes

This took me about 12 hours to design, prototype, print, and paint. Approximately, it took 4 hours to design and prototype, 6 hours of printing time, and 2 hours to paint (because I accidently kept ruining the paint job and having to redo it)

I used PLA filament and never printed below 125% speed after the first 5 minutes or so. I got very good results, but I likely would not recommend this setting for just about anything else.
