Description

PDF

This is my design of an elegantly swung hook to hang clothes or bags to a clothes rail. I designed it to provide a classic shape but with a simple and functional profile.

How to Print the Hook

Print the hook on its side. Larger hooks printed with PETG or ASA tend to wrap. Add brim or mouse ears in these cases to prevent the ends from lifting.

I created an example project LR2261-W12-R25-D15 Print.3mf for Prusa Slicer with all required settings. If you need to create your setup from scratch, check out the following table:

Nozzle Size:designed for 0.4mm,
but should work with most nozzle sizes.
Layer Height:designed for 0.2mm with 0.4mm nozzle,
but should work with most layer sizes.
Filament Materials:PLA, PETG or ASA
Perimeters:3 perimeters or more
Prusa Slicer Profile:Recommended: “0.2mm Quality”

Dimensions

The part number and file name have the following format:

LR2260-W<hook width>-R<lower radius>-D<rail diameter>.3mf

Hook Width and Height (W)

Dimension W defines the width and also height of the hook. The number after the letter in the filename is the dimension in mm. The height depends on the width and is calculated by multiplying the width by 1.5.

Clothes Rail Diameter (D)

Dimension D defines the nominal diameter of the clothes rail. The number after the letter in the filename is the width in mm. The hook works with round rails, but also with rounded rectangle rails. For the latter, the maximum height is twice the diameter. The hook will not slide on the rail easily if the height is larger.

Lower Radius (R)

Dimension R defines the radius of the lower curve of the hook. The number after the letter is the radius in mm. A larger radius creates more space and a larger lower section of the hook.

PDF Catalog

As this project contains 160 different model files, I also created a PDF where you have a visual guide of all models. This is especially useful if you know one parameter and search for a certain visual ratio.

You find the PDF catalog in the file LR2261 Catalog.pdf.

About the Design

The hooks LR2258 and LR2260 are technical and simple designs, so I tried to create a classic shape as well. The elegantly swung curve at the lower end of the hook is not a perfect circle to make the opening larger and therefore more useful.

The profile is the same as for LR2260 that works with a wide range of nozzle sizes and layer heights. It has a pleasing ratio between the flat sides and chamfers, simplifying prints and adds a beautiful effect when printed with shiny filaments.

PLA is not Ideal for Heavy Weights

PLA is not an ideal material. If stressed with large weights the material will slowly but permanently deform over time. So, if you print these hooks with PLA use them only for light weights.

Maximum Weights

The example print “LR2260-W12-R25-D15”, printed with PETG, will easily hold a bag with 3kg or  more. The maximum weight depends on the chosen hook width and material.

Conclusion

This classic hook shape is functional and easy to print. You can use it to hang bags, umbrellas or scarves to the clothing-rail in your wardrobe. Please rate this design and upload some photos if you find it useful.

Happy printing! 😄
