This holder with the shape of a sunflower is a cute way to use your Apple AirTag!

We designed it so that both the front and back have openings so you can still replace the AirTag's battery without disassembling the print. Also, when you ping your AirTag no sound is blocked by the print.

It also has a small hole so you can use it with a cord or keychain.

Parts description

This printable model is made of 4 parts:

  1. Casing: this is the central part, the thick ring with a partially-closed wall on one side.
  2. Inner ring: a thin ring used as part of the locking mechanism for the petals. This part must be printed using the “Detect thin walls” option, or equivalent in your slicer. We also suggest you use a 1 mm width brim around it for better stability.
  3. Lid: it closes the casing, holding the AirTag into place.
  4. Petals: they are locked in place around the casing (follow the instructions below) and serve as a holding point to attach a cord or keychain. There are two versions of the petals. The ones in the pictures are the “short” petals.

Additionally, you will need a small piece of ⌀ 1.75 mm filament. Cut one end squared (a straight, flat cut, not the usual 45° you would use to insert the filament in the extruder gear).

All the parts print without supports. They have to be printed at 0.2 mm or a smaller layer high (for the petals we recommend 0.1 mm to obtain smoother surfaces on the top side).

Assembly instructions

  • Place the casing on a flat surface with the larger opening facing down.
  • Slide the petals into place, with the flat part facing down. There are three small holes around the petals and another set of holes in the casing. Make sure those are aligned. The outer ring has a small lip that will stop the petals from sliding when they reach the correct height, you just have to rotate the two parts to align the holes.
  • Insert the flat end of the filament piece in the small holes from the center of the casing. Make sure it goes all the way in, so their tip stops against the petals.
  • Using a flush cutter, cut the filament while the tip is still inserted. Try to leave it almost flush with the inner surface of the casing. If you don't have a flush cutter, you can cut three filament snips about 2.5 mm long and then insert them with some tweezers.
  • Remove the brim from the inner ring and slide it into place. In some cases, it might bind against the tips of the filament pieces, but you should be able to bend it to slide it all the way in. When placed correctly, it should sit below the level of the three small slots in the casing. This locks the pieces of filament and the petals in position.
  • Insert the AirTag in the casing, with the shiny chrome part going through the bottom opening of the casing.
  • Place the lid on the casing aligning the three small tabs with the corresponding slots. Close the lid applying some pressure on the tabs.
  • Once the lid is closed the assembly is complete. You should verify that everything is securely locked in place.

Disclaimer

Due to the different properties of 3D printing filaments and the tolerances of different machines, you might need to scale up or down some of the print files, in case they don't fit when you print them.
