I designed these boxes to be able to recycle any spool into a nice container.

Like many people with 3D printers, I don’t throw away any of my used spools after they run out of filament. For me, It seemed like it would be a waste to just throw them away so I decided to find a way that I could have a usable container made out of any spool.

For this I turned to Fusion360 and designed a parametric shell that covers the open face of the spool and allows the spool to be turned into a usable container. I made it an octagon to allow for better printing orientations. I designed this to be fully adjustable, use no extra hardware, and not require ANY SUPPORTS! It features a satisfyingly clicky latch and filament hinges.

Here is a short video I made on how to adjust the parameters.

NOTES ON PARAMETER ADJUSTMENT:

  • In the file the parameters are labeled
    - SPOOLDI: the Spool’s Outer Diameter
    - Spool_OW: the spools outer width
    - Spool_Width: the width between the two edges of the spool
    - LIPTHICKNESS: the thickness you want the lip surrounding the edge to be
  • Add a little tolerance to all of the measurements to make sure it will fit. I use tolerances that total to around .25mm
    - Go a little less with Spool_Width
    - Go a little more with Spool_OW and SPOOLDI
  • LIPTHICKNESS is optional.
