While creating another print (see below) I got an idea for an improved snap-fit peg, and created this print to try it out. This snap fit incorporates what I believe are some improvements to typical snap fit pegs:

  • The peg wall is split in only one place, making for a stronger peg
  • The “retainers” on the end of the peg do not encircle the entire peg, but are limited to two small sections
  • The peg is “pointed.” This is a very important feature, as it make the peg easier to insert, and also has the effect of “squeezing” the end of the peg making it easier to insert the retainer portion.

This simple test print allows you to try out the concept first hand.

To see my print that gave me this idea, look at the link below - it uses a similar peg and illustrates how the peg in this test print might be used.

As the referenced print illustrates, this design also works without the peg “point,” but the point makes the peg easier to insert.

About the design

While the parameters I used in this test print are not critical, they are at least approximately the relative dimensions that I believe will work well :

  • 10mm diameter peg
  • 10.2mm diameter hole (a factor of 1.02 larger for clearance)
  • “retainer” thickness 0.8mm
  • peg “gap” is a 60° arc
  • “point” length 4mm
