Monitor Height Extender for Ergotron Standing Desk (Stick it to The Man version)

At my office (I work in a cubicle farm), rather than upgrading the cubicle desk surface, those of us who want to stand are given a stupid expensive (something like $700 bucks!) sit-or-stand lift for the monitors.  Leaving my opinion about the actual device aside, there is one characteristic which I think was done on purpose by the manufacturer to bilk companies out of more money.  When the stand is lifted all the way up and the monitor rail is all the way up, the top of the screens (I think I have 24-inch 1080p screens) are about 2 to 3 inches too low for me (I'm about 6-foot even, maybe 73 inches with shoes on (about 185 cm)).

Ergotron is happy to sell you a monitor height extension kit for about $100 bucks, which consists of two slide on brackets and then two VESA articulated mounts.

So a co-worker of mine had one of these slide on brackets and he let me borrow it so I could take it home and model it.  The actual bracket is made of poly-carbonate (probably) and is fairly stout.  After modeling what they had, I realized I could simply try to model the monitor rail and add a slide-on bottom - thus the “Stick-it-to-The-Man” height extension was born.

Some caveats:

• I would highly suggest printing out of ABS or PETG, something strong - although, I printed mine out of PolyTerra PLA and it's held up fine
• There is no adjustability other than height … I simply removed the existing monitor mount for the rail, rotated it 90-degrees, and then slid it down on this extender
  • I should note that I iterated a little bit on the angle of the extension - it is angled about 2-degrees, which is close, but not perfect (because there was some slop in the fit)
  • Also, I found it much easier to put the extender into the monitor mount first and then slide the extender onto the rail
• I printed with something like 30% infill using cubic.  I would suggest cubic because it has better 3D strength (compared to something like triangles).
• I printed mine on it's side with no supports.
  • I would suggest a few supports beneath the rail just because otherwise you have a very long overhang.  I had to post-process and melt those strands or lines back to the rest of the part with a soldering iron.
• I printed with 3 wall layers.  I would suggest no less than 3 wall layers - maybe even 4.

So take that! Ergotron!  You aren't getting any of my hard earned cash.
