For a two tier paint tower (as pictured) print the following:

  • Lower base
  • Upper Base (with or without bearings)
  • 4 Bottle Holders (included file printed twice)
  • Connector Tube
  • Topper (One of the two included in the print file)

All items are printed without supports and at layer height 0.20mm. All but the Bottle Holder pieces can be printed in PLA. For the Bottle Holder recommend PETG be used to give the fingers that hold the bottles some flexibility.

Additionally you will need 2 filament spools and a way to cut them (bandsaw, hand saw or other).

Assembly:

For assemble 2 filament spools are used from 1kg rolls of Amazon BasicFil. In order to give enough clearance for the bottles to sit on the lower tier the spools central shaft has to be elongated.  To do this cut one spool in half (I used a bandsaw but a handsaw would work too) and cut the top off the second one.  Place one spool half on top of the spool that had just the top cut off with the center shafts facing each other. This will give more clearance between the two sides of the spools. Then place the second half spool on top of the other two with the shaft facing up. Place the Connector Tube (same orientation as in the print file) down the center of all the shafts to lock all the spools in place.  Select one of the two Topper options and place that on top. Take two Bottle Holders and attach them around the shaft of the lower tier and then two more Bottle Holders to go around the upper tier. Place the Upper Basev(with or without bearings, see below) into the Lower base. Then place the Spool assembly onto the Upper Base.

NOTE:  For the Upper Base with Integrated Bearings the small ring of the Upper Base should be a snug fit into the shaft opening of the spool. Do not push it in so far that the spool bottoms out or the bottom of the spool will rub on the lower (larger) ring. If the fit is a little loose the two parts can be glued together with hot glue or CA glue.

Upper Base Options:  Two different types of Upper Bases were designed. The one with bearings takes ¼" ball bearings. Print both parts and set the small ring on top of the big one with the notches lined up. Push the bearings into the notch to “attach” the two parts and create the bearing. The method was remixed from this file:  Fully parametric ball bearings by Adrián Vidal | Download free STL model | Printables.com. If ball bearings are not wanted then print the Upper Base without bearings. It will work but does not spin as easily and needs the Lower Base to work.

Topper Options:  Two different types of Toppers were designed. The one with the hole in the middle gives a convenient space for paint brushes to be stored while the one without give room for 4 more bottles.
