Created for a cosplay at Katsucon 2019.

To light the lamp I used:

  • CR2032 round button cell battery holder
  • 3mm LED Light Emitting Diodes
  • Energizer CR2032 Lithium 3v Battery (1 Pack of 5)

Print Settings

Printer:

HyperCube Evolution

Rafts:

No

Supports:

Yes

Resolution:

.2

Infill:

Various

Filament: 3D Solutech, Hatchbox PLA

Real Black, White, Clear, Wood

Notes:

The ribs and rings were printed with 20% infill and brim to prevent warping.

The body of the lantern was printed with 20% infill and support with rib slots facing up.

The lid and cap were printed upside down with 30% infill .

The alignment jig/display stand was printed at 20% infill with Hatchbox Wood PLA.

The diffuser is printed in spirilize/vase mode with top/bottom thickness of zero and a brim.

The diffuser can be printed in clear or a color.

(Optional)

The Reflector is printed in white, or painted white, or covered in aluminum foil.

Post-Printing

Cage and Lamp Body Assembly Instructions

Do NOT glue until all alignments are verified.

Remove any remaining brim and over extrusion prior to assembly.

If you opt to not print the display/alignment stand then skip steps 6 and 9.

  • Cage

    1. Assemble the U ribs together.
    2. Place rings into position on the ribs.
    3. Dry assemble the U ribs into the slots in the bottom of the lantern body and make sure they are seated properly.
    4. Add the remaining J ribs and hold the assembly together by wrapping with a few rubber bands.
    5. Verify that ribs meet correctly at bottom of lamp.
    6. Place the assembly into the alignment/display stand to hold the correct angular alignments between the ribs.
    7. Verify everything is seated correctly and rings are in position.
    8. Do NOT glue ribs into the lantern body at this time.

Glue the ribs to the rings by placing a small drop of glue at each joint. Do not glue ribs into the lantern body at this time. 9. After drying remove from display stand. 10. Glue the bottom rib joints together.

  • Lamp Body

    1. The Lamp Housing is a close fit. Depending on the printer, it may need some sanding to allow it to be pressed into the bottom of the Lantern Body. It should be pressed up flush with the bottom of the lantern body's battery compartment.
    2. The Lamp Housing can be glued or left unglued until final assembly to allow easier painting and finishing if required.

Prior to final assembly do any sanding and finishing required. The fits between parts is tight; any filler or paint will need to be sanded to allow assembly of the ribs into the lantern base.

Wiring

LED Lamp and Reflector Assembly

LED Lighting

  • LED lead identification:

LED's have a negative and positive connection. Depending on the LED manufacturer the positive (anode) is either the longer lead or the one opposite a flat side on the LED. The remaining lead is the negative(cathode).

If connected backward it will not light.

-LED Lamp Assembly

  1. Press the LEDs into the LED Holder. A scant drop of glue will hold them in position.
  2. Bend leads of each pair of LEDs with the cathode of one connected to the anode of the other. (see picture)
  3. Connect the remaining leads, which will be either both anodes or both cathodes, together.
  4. Test by placing two CR2032 batteries in the holder and touching one lead to the anode pair and the other to the cathode pair.

If they don't light try reversing the connection.

If they still don't light the LEDs are connected together incorrectly. Try again. 5. When they light, solder the connections.

-Reflector Assembly (Optional)

The reflector can be either printed in white, or painted white, or covered with aluminum foil.

For reference only. Not to scale. Measurements in millimeters.

Lantern Cap Assembly

  • Lamp Cap
    1. There is a 2.2mm through-hole in the cap.
    2. Bend wire to form the handle and insert into the cap. (I used 1.95mm piano wire for the handle)

A medium gauge wire clothes hanger measures 1.92mm. It will be weaker than piano wire but may be an alternative.

Final Assembly

  1. Use a drop of glue to fasten the lamp housing to the lamp body.
  2. Insert the cage ribs into the slots on the lamp body and glue.
  3. Position the lantern lid in position and glue.
  4. (Optional) place reflector into lamp housing.
  5. Place the LED lamp assembly into the end of the diffuser and place into the lamp housing.
  6. Place the battery holder into the battery compartment.
  7. Screw on the lantern cap.
  8. Place the Scoutflies Lantern into its display stand and admire your work.
