This is a quick (but very functional) draft of an adapter to replace the 5015 radial print cooling fan used on the Bondtech Shortcut Toolhead for Prusa MK3s with a 40mm axial one.

This allows one to use a wide variety of 40mm axial fans, advantages include lower noise and higher cooling performance. Also 5015 fans are notorious for their short bearing lifetime (even the Sunon ones are kinda meh), the 40mm fan class has much better quality options available if you want to spend the money.

The fan is angled upwards and to the left to reduce intake of air from directly above the printbed or waste air from other cooling fans.

The part does not require modification to either the fan shroud or other parts of the toolhead => you can continue using all fan shrouds designed for the 5015 fan.

I included spacers if you intend on reusing the original screws.

As far as printing goes:

  • The part can be printed without supports if you place the side for the fan on the printbed
  • I printed it in PETG, but frankly any filament should work because there are neither mechanical or thermal stresses placed on the part
  • I printed with a 0.4 mm nozzle at 0.2mm layer height. The part does not require tight tolerances to function (nor was this a consideration when drafting), so you are fine with using different layer heights, though I would not recommend larger nozzle sizes.
  • Print time should be around 2 hours with settings in the range of the default Prusa PETG profile

After printing:

  • You have to thread the fan mounting holes using a M3 Tap by design. I also included a version with slightly bigger holes to make it possible to mount a fan without tapping, but no guarantees.

Yet to be done:

  • Design a version with slots for nuts so you dont have to tap.
