This is a folding chess board. How to fold it is up to you. The idea is to put the chess pieces inside once folded (of course). I haven't designed lids for the open ends yet though. Or a latching mechanism for the free ends. So it won;t function as a box until some thing like that is printed. Please tell me if you make something that will work :)
The hinge pins are pieces of 1.75mm filament.
Printing hints:
- Print the pieces face down. (you will see that the holes for the hinges are teardrop shaped to avoid post processing).
- Use concentric infill to get a nice cross pattern on the squares.
- Don't use black and white like I did. Follow FIDE reccomendations and use natural colours such as green, brown and ivory.
Assembly Hints
- Glue magnets (12mm OD, up to 4mm thick) into the pieces with superglue if you want a magnetic board. Make sure all the magnets are the same way around. Wear gloves, or leave pieces of your fingertips behind. I suggest using some kin of rod to press the magnet into the slot once you have applied superglue.
- Assemble piece by piece, inserting a piece of filament and clipping it off (need a seperate hinge pin for each hinge joint.
