Rework of a Laurel Wreath by https://www.thingiverse.com/yk9219k

The original SVG contains several technical artefacts that make it dificult to create a proper solid in 3D:

  • the elements are not merged. They are overlapping outlines.
  • the outlines are technically not closed. the two endpoints coincide only when allowing some rounding.
  • many of the leaves are disconnected.
  • there are many T-intersections, where one arm has duplicate lines.

I've merged the elements, by

  • closing all outlines
  • making them overlap properly, not just touching with a T-intersection
  • extended several twigs to really connect the leaves.
  • removed all holes (by makeing leaves smaller
  • separated the stems and center part of the ribbon as an extra layer.

The result is Laurel_Wreath_merged.svg

The file Laura_Wreath.FCstd is a 3D-extrusion with 10° draft added -- useful for metal casting. It is still a delicate and fragile object!

The method of applying a draft is a horrible hack. 9 extrusion copies, where only one is an exact perpendicular extrusions, the other 8 are slighly off to the sides, all combinations of (-1, 0, 1) in both X and Y. This wirks astonishingly well, even for complex objects.

The only visible artefact is that very sharp points separate into three, further down.

A much nicer result should be possible with a Minkowski operator applying a cone, stay tuned...
