I saw the Woven Pencil Holder and thought it would be fun to model up my own fully parametric version. The cover photo is a print in wood-fill PLA, which I think makes for a nice effect that looks quite a bit like real wicker.

Update 9 June 2022:

I cleaned up the Fusion 360 file to simplify it and make some improvements. It's much less prone to breaking on parameter changes and should render faster (although it can still take a few minutes to render after each parameter change). I was also able to eliminate most of the problematic overhangs on the top braid.

You can make your own cups in the size you want by modifying the following (starred) parameters:

  • cup_diameter - Outside cup diameter (default: 80mm).
  • cup_height - Absolute cup height (default: 95mm).
  • band_height - Base height of the horizontal wicker bands (taller heights result in fewer bands for the same height cup, which means faster rendering/printing); the actual band height may be slightly larger in order to fit the specified height total cup height (default: 5mm).
  • post_spacing_modifier - Scale factor used for calculating the spacing between vertical posts, where larger spacing values result in fewer posts and faster rendering/printing (default: 1.5mm).

I've included the following models in 3MF format (with the modified parameters listed):

  • wicker_cup.3mf - (file defaults)
  • wicker_cup_old.3mf - post_spacing_modifier: 1.25 (original version with a slightly tighter weave and more vertical posts)
  • wicker_trash_can.3mf - cup_diameter: 200; cup_height: 240 (should fit in an Ender 3 build volume)
