Description

PDF

This holder is both very handy (only requires one hand to attach or release a note!) and stylish! I have printed a lot of them in various colors and I am using them often.

Additional Material required:

Besides you printer and some filemant you will need two things:

  • A 20mm metal ball. You can also use gemstones from various minerals. Just make sure the diameter is approximately 20mm. Also it helps when they are not too light.
  • 2 cylindric magnets 15mm x 3mm

Printing

The Design can be printed in PETG or PLA. I do recommend to print in PLA to get the best result. Silk PLA most likely will not work - the print is very likely to break when holding it at the cage.

I have provided both the 3MF files containing the optimized settings and the gcode files for the MK3s. For PLA a brim is requires, PETG can be printed without.

There are two pauses during print:

  • At the first pause you have to insert the two magents into the back of the holder. Make sure they are flush, so that they can not be hit by the extruder when resuming print:

  • At the second pause you have to insert the ball:

Source Code and Design Considerations

The part has been designed using OpenSCAD. I have provided the source code for download, so you can adjust the design to your needs. Please note that regarding the code this is not the best design I have ever done. It ended up to me more complicated that I thought…

The design went through a lot of iterations until I finally ended up being happy:

To ensure a good print result there two unusual features in the design for enhancing the print process:

  • A small cylinder for the metal ball to sit on. This prevents it from pressing against the cage. Otherwise there would be layer shifting in the result
  • Two wipe towers. When slicing with PrusaSlicer they will be printed upon right after each printing pause, which will result in a much cleaner print of the actual design.

Happy printing!
