Info
Some other similar brackets use the original mounting screws and nuts to attach the spool bracket to the adapter. I considered this but wanted a thicker mount that was less likely to bend under the weight of the spool.

  • Use 6mm self-tapping screws to attach the original filament spool bracket to the adapter
  • No need to screw the bracket to the rail - it is secure enough.
  • Supports are not strictly required. The only part of the print that could benefit from supports are the holes for the self-tappers. Experiment with these settings
  • Besides support I used the default settings for Cura 2.8 Standard quality prints.

Background

I needed to move my filament spool from the top of my Ender 3 to the side. My first bracket adapter was smaller but tended to bend/warp under the weight of a 1kg spool. It also had the spool at a more acute angle which was gave a bit more space but added to the strain on the bracket.

This bracket is much more sturdy. It holds the original Ender 3 spool bracket at 45 degrees to the side of the printer.

Improvement Points

  • Currently the spool is quite close to the Z access making it fiddly to get it in and out. Figure out how to mount the spool slightly further away without compromising strength.
